Is it worth spending a night in Dubrovnik?

Absolutely, yes! As a true believer of slow travel, I can tell you firsthand that spending a night in Dubrovnik allows you to experience the city in a completely different perspective.

My travels across Europe have taught me that staying overnight in a destination can give you completely different view of a city (it gives you the chance to explore the city without the daytime crowds of tourists), giving you a more authentic and peaceful experience.

Dubrovnik is the perfect example of how staying longer can transform your visit(and I would say a night is not enough). The Old Town of Dubrovnik offers a completely different vibe by day and night. The difference is something you have to experience for yourself, hope the pictures in this post can give you some idea.

Most importantly, if you are someone who doesn’t enjoy hustling and bustling, of course you have to spend at least a night in Dubrovnik! Since you can get up early in the morning to capture the town without hectic crowds.

So if I have convinced you, you might ask me, so how many days in Dubrovnik do I recommend?

Me myself I stayed 3 nights in Dubrovnik and I would say that is just the right amount.

The first full day you can start your day with the Dubrovnik walls, then visit museums (which I highly recommend you to purchase the Dubrovnik card as it opens so many doors for you), and in the evening take the Dubrovnik cable car and see the city from the top.

The next day is for you to explore the places you have missed from the game of thrones scenes, or museums that you have missed. If you have made the most out of your first day, then you might consider to visit the Lokrum island across or do a day trip to Montenegro.

So you can tell, you won’t be bored or be stuck in this touristic old town😉

If you are looking for suggestions for best areas to stay in Dubrovnik, of course I would say look for Dubrovnik hotels old town! Imagine living in the scene of game of thrones, isn’t that magical?

Pros for Dubrovnik hotels old town

✅Buying you time to see the city early in the morning without bustling crowds

✅Beating the midday heat because you can start exploring the Dubrovnik walls in the earlier part of the day(recommended to do so during summer because there are no shields on the wall to save you from direct sun)

Cons for Dubrovnik hotels old town

❌It is not recommended if you are noise sensitive.

❗️If you got heavy carry on luggage, you will suffer a bit( But read further and I will tell you the solution)

If you don’t fancy the idea of staying in Dubrovnik hotels old town, the area I would recommend is outside the gates: the Pile-kono area. It also allows you to explore the old town early in the day, and the area is slightly wider, not too condensed as the old town.

Tips for Dubrovnik hotels Old town

Now lets get straight to the point, things to make your stay in Dubrobnik old town easier:

Expect some stairs if you are planning to visit Dubrovnik, though it’s moderate level (haha, saying someone who lived in Lisbon)so shouldn’t frighten you too much.

Leave your check in Luggage at your final stop

If you’re traveling with heavy luggage, it might be a good idea to leave your larger bags at the location where you first arrived in the country.
For example, since I flew in and out of Croatia through Zagreb, I left my check-in luggage at the hotel where I’d be staying on my last night in Zagreb.

Baggage service in Dubrovnik

If you are not able to do that, don’t panic, cause here’s the tip! Book Baggage pick up & delivery service so you don’t have to carry it up the stairs yourselves!

Where to stay in Dubrovnik old town

In the map, you can choose hotels that are close to the main road (Orange part) which cars have access and closer to the red gates(where you enter the old town) I have pointed out in the map.

For example I lived in the oval brown part with more stairs, but the driver was able to drop me at the Buza gate, and my stay was at the upper part of the area (which means less stairs from that gate), so carrying the luggage going down from the Buza gate to the accommodation was easy for me.

(I saw those with Big luggages having to go UP the stairs😰that was tough)

Another way to make your stay easier would be choosing an accommodation in the gray part, where most main attractions are, it’s flatter comparing to the brown part.

A very important step you have to do is to read the reviews on hotel booking websites! (In Europe this is very essential!! check if the accommodation got elevators or aircon)
