5 Must visit Salzburg Christmas markets
I remember there was a saying about every country/ city deserves two visits—once in the summer and another during the winter. After my 3rd visit to Salzburg, I couldn’t agree more. In winter, Salzburg transforms into a nostalgia wonderland which every street and building sparkles with magic, and Salzburg Christmas markets just add that extra touch to this magical atmosphere. If you haven’t experienced Salzburg in winter, I promise you this is a once in a lifetime experience, even Vienna Christmas markets couldn’t beat this…(and I am the biggest fan of Vienna).

Salzburg monthly weather forecast

This is my 3rd time visiting Salzburg, with snow and the Christmas atmosphere made me fall in love with this city again. To absorb all the Christmas vibes, I went to 4 Christmas markets which I would say is totally visit worthy.
Reasons to visit Salzburg Christmas market
If you are planning to experience a white christmas this year, Salzburg should be one of your best choices. It will snow in December in Salzburg. And what makes it different is that the snow would be “dry” which is very enjoyable and romantic (unlike in Vienna, you became somewhat messy after their wet snow ). Salzburg is a nostalgia city, and Christmas market just adds this magical touch to it.
While in Salzburg, you can also grab the chance and visit the famous Hallstatt during winter. Whats more, besides experiencing Austrian Christmas, Salzburg is just 1.5 hour train ride from Munich. Are you ready to make the most out of this Christmas?!

This Christmas market standing in the center of the Salzburg old town stands out as one of the finest Christmas market out there indeed! During my three-days stay in Salzburg, I couldn’t resist going there every single day.

Christmas lights surrounded by those ancient buildings and the Dom of Salzburg, it was like taking a stroll back in time. In fact, this is one of the world’s oldest Advent markets that goes all the way back to the late 15th century.

What you can enjoy here range from Christmas chores(every Tuesday 6 – 8 p.m.), regional food to Traditional hand crafted products. Imagine an evening, wandering through the stalls with mulled wine in hand, picking souvenirs to bring back home.

Though it costs to enter, but I guarantee that it worths every penny! The venue is big which you can spend at least half a day here with your family. You will experience a cozy, warm ambiance created by more than 700 conifers decked out with 10,000 red baubles. You will also find the Palace façade transforms into a gigantic Advent calendar, its 24 windows revealing delightful surprises. It’s like stepping into a festive fairy tale where every corner holds a touch of magic and joy.

Children’s Christmas World
The section dedicated to kids is big, featuring children-sized cottages where they can try their hand at baking cookies. The fun continues with face-painting, festive Christmas train, and the opportunity to grill sausages at the campfire. Plus, there’s a special Christmas post office where the little ones can write a letter to the “Christkind” (aka baby Jesus).
